Prediction market exchange Kalshi secured a $1 billion funding round that pushed its valuation to $40,000,000,000, marking an eightfold increase from a $5 billion valuation recorded in October 2025, according to a report by coinreaders.com citing CNBC.
Sequoia Capital and Wellington Management Lead the Financing
The $1 billion funding round completed on a Thursday was co-led by Sequoia Capital and Wellington Management, coinreaders.com reported. This latest capital injection follows an earlier financing round in May that valued the New York-based prediction market exchange at $22,000,000,000.
World Cup, NFL, and Elections Drive Trading Growth
Trading volume on Kalshi surged following the May valuation, propelled heavily by the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the NFL season. Both sporting events generated a surge in combo contracts, mirroring multi-leg wagers common in traditional sports betting. Trading activity also climbed ahead of the United States midterm elections, coinreaders.com reported.
Federal Appeals Court Rulings Present Regulatory Headwinds
While transaction volumes climbed, Kalshi faced legal hurdles concerning its sports-related products. Two U.S. appeals courts ruled in August and September that state governments retain the authority to regulate sports-related event contracts. Kalshi and competing prediction platforms contend that federal regulators hold exclusive jurisdiction over these markets. Because a third appeals court backed the federal oversight argument, the dispute is widely expected to reach the U.S. Supreme Court.
Expanding Beyond Prediction Markets Into Perpetual Futures
Kalshi pushed beyond traditional prediction markets in late May by introducing its first non-prediction product: perpetual futures. The launch made the platform the first exchange to offer popular cryptocurrency trading products natively in the United States. In a blog post announcing the recent funding, company executives stated that prediction markets represented only an initial step toward building a broader financial exchange.
Deploying New Capital for Leverage and Computing Markets
With the fresh $1 billion capital injection, Kalshi plans to develop leveraged event contracts, perpetual futures tied to individual stocks, and markets for trading computing prices, coinreaders.com reported. The exchange also intends to maintain its expansion into institutional finance. In September, Kalshi reported working with 500 institutional clients, with non-market-maker institutions accounting for 25% of total platform trading volume.
Public Listing Remains on the Horizon After 2027
Although Kalshi has experienced explosive growth in private markets over the past year, an initial public offering remains distant. Tarek Mansour, the chief executive officer of Kalshi, stated during a June appearance on CNBC’s Squawk Box that the company is weighing a future public stock offering, though any such move would not occur until after 2027. “For a company of our financial scale and our growth rate, those are discussions that ought to be had,” Mansour said.
