Will Manchester United burn out a promising new coach or finally manage to revive themselves? This Tuesday, the Red Devils would have reached an agreement with their former midfielder Michael Carrick for him to lead the team until the end of the season, reports journalist Fabrizio Romano. The former England international would take on the role of interim manager after the dismissal of Ruben Amorim at the start of January.
According to The Athletic, the 44-year-old coach will be accompanied by the staff of his choice. He would have been preferred to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, already in charge of the Mancunians from 2018 to 2021. Their destiny had been linked during and at the end of the Norwegian’s mandate. Carrick had acted as interim for three matches to ensure the junction between the end of Solskjaer’s stint and the start of Ralf Rangnick’s.
A derby to start
The Englishman had been the Scandinavian’s deputy, but also that of José Mourinho. He knows the house perfectly, which did not prevent him from managing Middlesbrough for three seasons. Appointed before the 18th day of the Championship during the 2022-2023 financial year, Carrick took the club from 21st to 4th place in the English second division. The adventure ended with his ouster at the end of last season.
This time, the ex-defensive midfielder will take charge of a club positioned 7th in the Premier League, just three points from 4th place. His former teammate Darren Fletcher officiated in the two matches following Amorim’s departure, for a draw against Burnley (2-2) and an elimination in the 3rd round of the FA Cup against Brighton (2-1). This new episode with MU will start strong for Carrick. The Red Devils have a meeting with Manchester City on Saturday.
