Not sure that this is enough to console him. Three days after the defeat conceded by his Morocco in the CAN 2025 final against Senegal (1-0 ap), Walid Regragui was elected best coach of the competition by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The body responsible for organizing the continental tournament announced this Wednesday evening the names of the latest winners of the individual awards. While certain trophies were awarded on Sunday, such as that of the best player, awarded to Sadio Mané, the coach of the Atlas Lions was chosen to reward “the solid performance and tactical mastery displayed by Morocco throughout the tournament”.
Bounou and Brahim Diaz also rewarded
Regragui thus succeeds Émerse Faé, awarded in 2024 after leading Ivory Coast to the title at the end of an incredible edition. Although he failed to win the coveted trophy, the 50-year-old technician still managed to put Morocco back in the CAN final for the first time in 22 years. Under his command, the host country was not beaten in 90 minutes throughout the competition, only losing in overtime against the Senegalese champion.
Among the other awards won by the Moroccans, Yassine Bounou was elected best goalkeeper, while Brahim Diaz finished at the top of the scorers’ ranking with 5 goals. Note that the fair play prize was also awarded to the Atlas Lions.
