Borussia Dortmund had a very weak evening and lost to the weakened Tottenham Hotspurs. Two early goals conceded and a red card decide the game. Bayer Leverkusen also loses their game – an overview of the Champions League.
Borussia Dortmund has suffered a severe setback in the fight for a direct place in the Champions League round of 16. BVB lost 2-0 when they were outnumbered by struggling Europa League winners Tottenham Hotspur. The goals for the Spurs, who were particularly furious in the first half, were scored by Cristian Romero (14th minute) and Dominic Solanke (37th).
After a red card for Daniel Svensson (24th), Borussia had to make do with ten players for more than an hour. Before the last game of the league phase next week against Inter Milan, there are many indications that BVB will have to take the detour via the playoffs for the round of the best 16 teams.
BVB actually wanted to put pressure on early against the ailing Spurs, who have major injury concerns. That didn’t work. After a Tottenham corner, the Westphalia team failed to clear the ball. Wilson Odobert passed the ball sharply into the middle and Romero scored to make it 1-0.
The lead gave the hosts, who are only in 14th place in the Premier League, security. Tottenham pressed, BVB had big problems. And they got even bigger. Svensson hit the ball very easily, but so did Odobert with his leg stretched out and his sole open. Referee Glenn Nyberg showed the red card.
Being outnumbered, BVB struggled for stability, but Spurs didn’t allow that. Once again the eye-catching Odobert prepared from the right. The 21-year-old tunneled through Borussia central defender Waldemar Anton and Solanke scored in the middle to make it 2-0.
Borussia had virtually no offense at all in a desolate first half. At halftime it was 11-0 for Tottenham after shots on goal. Dortmund wasn’t really dangerous in the second half either.
Leverkusen loses in Piraeus
Bayer Leverkusen continued their messed up start to the year in the Champions League and lost 2-0 at Olympiacos Piraeus. Coach Kasper Hjulmand’s team is threatened with elimination from the premier class. Costinha (2nd) and Mehdi Taremi (45th + 1) scored the goals for the Greek champions.
With only one match day left in the league phase, the Werkself remain at nine points and are under pressure in the last game against Villareal. Last year it took at least eleven points to finish in the top 24 and take part in the play-offs. Bayer also lost the first two games of the new year in the Bundesliga.
