Brian Brobbey was offered help by John Bosman during his time at Ajax. The latter explains this ESPN. The former striker was approached by Ajax to help Brobbey with heading, responded positively, but heard nothing more after that.
Brobbey was not exactly known for his heading skills in the Netherlands, which is why Ajax decided to call in Bosman’s help. He played for the Amsterdam team in the 1980s and was known for his heading power. After the match against SC Heerenveen in November 2023, in which Brobbey scored with his head, he was asked about it.
“Do I often train on it? Not really, but John Bosman, a leading specialist, will arrive soon,” Brobbey said opposite ESPN. “Then we’ll get to work. I used to train with him when I was a youth and I could head the ball pretty well, so we’ll see.”
Bosman now reveals at Eredivisie file that in the end he did not get to work with Brobbey at all. “No, I was asked if I wanted to train with Brobbey, on crosses and such. But it never really came to fruition.”
“I said: ‘Let me know how or what’. It wasn’t my fault, but it didn’t happen anymore. As a striker you obviously have to be able to head a bit, because you get a lot of balls there. You don’t have to be a real specialist, but you have to be able to put the ball between the posts.”
“It happened to him quite often that he would get a ball on top of his head, causing them to go over. Then you have to jump a little earlier, so that you are above the ball,” says Bosman.
Brobbey has now left for Sunderland, where he is increasingly finding his feet. Last weekend he scored a beautiful and important goal in the match against Tottenham Hotspur (1-1).
