Not only do the Winter Olympics begin in Cortina on February 6th – on this day there will also be celebrations at the Gala Night of Sports in Linz’s Brucknerhaus, organized by the OÖN and LIVA and presented by Oberbank. And who better to gild this event than Benjamin Raich?
It was exactly 20 years ago that the now 47-year-old won big at the 2006 Olympic Games – then also in Italy, in Sestriere. Gold in the giant slalom was followed by gold in the slalom. And it would have been even more than the Olympic double if he hadn’t finished in the lead in the combined slalom.

“I’m really looking forward to the gala night of sports in Linz. My schedule is very busy, but I’m happy to make this detour,” says Raich, who will come directly from Pitztal to Upper Austria. He lives there with his wife Marlies and their three children Josef, Jakob and Magdalena. The Tyrolean’s schedule is just as full as his medal cabinet: in addition to two Olympic gold medals, he also has ten World Championship medals, including three gold medals in Bormio 2005 (slalom and combination) and 2007 in Aare (team), and two Olympic bronze medals in Salt Lake City 2002.
