Belarus Football: Gancharenko on League Realities

Head coach of the Belarusian national team Viktor Gancharenko spoke out about the motivation and goals of working with the national team.

— What is your motivation to lead the team? It’s customary here that it doesn’t add to our reputation.

— I like that there is enthusiasm with our arrival. But this is a situation where there will be more difficulties. We understand perfectly well that before there were Belkevich, Khatskevich, Gleb and Kutuzov. This is not the situation now.

But we must work in our realities. There is no coach who works in football and does not dream of working for the national team. I repeat: there is no ideal time to come.

— Your predecessor was given the task of reaching the qualifying playoffs. Many immediately said that this task was impossible. So, maybe we don’t need such high standards if we are not even at the average European level?

“I think it’s wrong if we say that we will fight for fourth or fifth place. I think the same situation happened with Carlos Alos. Any cycle, any time can be rotated. We cannot start from the fact that everything is bad here,” Gancharenko said.

Let us remind you that the candidacy Victor Hancharenko was approved during the executive committee of the Belarusian Football Federation on January 6.

The post of head coach of the White Wings became vacant after the staff of the Spanish specialist was dismissed Carlos Alos Ferrer. The foreign coach was fired after unsatisfactory results in the selection for the 2026 World Cup.

Gancharenko’s coaching staff will include his constant assistant Alexander Ermakovich. Candidates for other assistants are still being agreed upon.

The contract with Gancharenko is for 4 years – until the end of 2029.
