Bamberg Baskets vs Ludwigsburg: A Clear Difference

The BMA365 Bamberg Baskets suffered a significant setback on matchday 15 of the easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga.

In the game presented by AOK Bayern, head coach Anton Gavel’s team lost to MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg on Friday evening in front of 4,127 spectators in the BROSE ARENA 79:100 (40:52). As a result, Bamberg missed out on further consolidating their good position in the table shortly before the end of the first half of the season.

Ludwigsburg sets the tone from the start

From the first minute you could feel the intensity with which the guests from Baden-Württemberg went into this game. Aggressive in defense, consistent in rebounding and extremely powerful in transition, the MHP RIESEN sent a clear signal early on. After just over two minutes, Anton Gavel was forced to take his first timeout after three quick threes from Traveon Buchanan, Elijah Hughes and Adam Polas Bartolo (0:9/3.).

Although Demarcus Demonia and EJ Onu were able to shorten the score briefly, Ludwigsburg remained the clearly dominant team. A 10-0 run by the guests ensured clear conditions early on (5:19/6.). Bamberg’s many ball losses in particular – eight in the first quarter alone – played into the GIANT’s hands. Despite great efforts from Moritz Krimmer, Austin Crowley and Ensminger, the first section ended with a clear 19:30 from the hosts’ perspective.

Offensive rebounds and turnovers as a sticking point

The picture hardly changed in the second quarter either. Ludwigsburg controlled the game and extended the lead to over 20 points for the first time with another run (21:42/13th). Bamberg also had to contend with foul problems: both EJ Onu and Kevin Keppeler had three personal fouls each early on.

What was particularly painful from Bamberg’s perspective were the guests’ many second chances. In the second quarter alone, the GIANTS secured twelve offensive rebounds. In total, Ludwigsburg had 22 offensive rebounds and thus a whopping 30 more throw attempts than the home team – a value that had a significant impact on the course of the game. Shortly before the break, however, Bamberg showed morale and reduced the score to 40:52 at halftime with a 7-1 spurt.

Hope briefly arises – Ludwigsburg counters coldly

After the break, the BMA365 Bamberg Baskets initially managed to keep the deficit stable. After a successful fast break by Richard Balint to make it 49:61 (24th), a possible turnaround was in the air. But when a three-pointer from Demarcus Demonia narrowly missed its target, the guests took advantage of this scene. Another 12-0 run by Ludwigsburg quickly dashed Bamberg’s hopes (49:73/29th). The final score was 54:74, and the guests continued to leave no doubt about the outcome of the game.

Start-finish victory for the RIESEN in the final quarter

Although Austin Crowley briefly brought emotions to the BROSE ARENA with five quick points at the beginning of the fourth quarter (59:74/32nd), a timeout by Ludwigsburg’s head coach Mikko Riipinen immediately stopped the little run. With a dominant 21:6 spurt, the RIESEN made it 65:95 (36th) a little later and thus finally secured the decision. Traveon Buchanan added the final point to a strong performance from the guests with a three-pointer just under 100 seconds before the end and made it 100 points.

Voices about the game

Demarcus Demonia (BMA365 Bamberg Baskets):

“Ludwigsburg started this game much more aggressively. We should have determined the intensity in this game, but we weren’t even able to match their intensity today. You can’t win a game with 24 turnovers and 22 offensive rebounds allowed. That’s the story of this game.”

Anton Gavel (Head Coach BMA365 Bamberg Baskets):

“If you start the game the way we started and are ultimately beaten with the same means as last time in Bonn, then I have to do a better job in preparing the team for the game. Ludwigsburg had 30 more shots, which is an incredible number. We also had 24 turnovers and gave up 22 offensive rebounds.”

Mikko Riipinen (Head Coach MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg):

“I’m happy and very proud of our team because we’ve worked a lot and hard to get consistency in our game, even if everything doesn’t go really well. Today we played almost the entire game consistently, which is a big step forward for us.”

Top scorers and statistics at a glance

The best thrower of the game was Demarcus Demonia with 25 points for Bamberg. The guests were convincing Traveon Buchanan (24 points), Reading Smar (19) and Elijah Hughes (17). The clear advantage in rebounds and ball winnings was ultimately the key to Ludwigsburg’s success.

Looking ahead: Frankenderby is coming

The BMA365 Bamberg Baskets don’t have much time to ponder. Already next Saturday, January 17ththe next home game awaits. Then there will be the Frankenderby against the Fitness First Würzburg Baskets in the BROSE ARENA. Tip-off is over 6:30 p.m. The team will do everything in its power to show a reaction in front of their own audience and get back on the road to success.
