Jeremie Frimpong had to leave early in the Champions League match between Liverpool and Qarabag. The right back dropped out after four minutes of play with a muscle injury.
There is still plenty at stake for the formation of Arne Slot in the final league phase match of the Champions League against Qarabag. Liverpool are in fifth place before the match and can therefore join the top eight on Wednesday evening to skip the intermediate round.
Opponent Qarabag is surprisingly eighteenth and is therefore, just like PSV and Ajax, still in the fight to reach the intermediate round. Qarabag managed to perform earlier this season with victories over Benfica and Eintracht Frankfurt. A point was also taken against Chelsea.
Slot decided to play with his strongest team and therefore created a starting position for Frimpong, Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch, who was allowed to play as central defender.
After just four minutes of play, Slot received bad news. Frimpong sat down and indicated that he had to be substituted. The international appears to have suffered a muscle injury for the second time this season.
Because Conor Bradley is also sidelined for a long time with an injury, the Dutch trainer has few tastes left in the right back position.
National coach Ronald Koeman will hope that Frimpong’s injury will not be too bad with a view to next summer’s World Cup. The lightning-fast winger is normally assured of a place in the Dutch selection.
