Álvaro Arbeloa, coach of Real Madrid, was confronted with recent words from José Mourinho, coach of Benfica, who before the game with Juventus was “surprised” by coaches with no experience at top clubs.
Mourinho was asked if he was surprised that Luciano Spalletti was appointed Juve coach, and he replied: «The only surprise for me is when a coach with no history, with no work done, has the possibility of coaching the biggest clubs in the world. When Milan sign Allegri, when Juve sign Luciano, when Roma sign Gasperini, it’s not a surprise because we’re talking about coaches with experience. When the opposite happens, it is a surprise.”
The Portuguese didn’t say names, but the hat could fit many and Arbeloa was direct: «Everyone knows what José Mourinho represents to me. If a coach with his experience speaks, and especially him, I listen and analyze.”
Faced with criticism of his speech and gestures, such as the one he had next to the Champions League cups – he was being filmed and stopped in front of the Cups wall, which generated criticism, as it is a place he often passes by, Arbeloa explained. «It was the first time I was going to the stadium as a coach and I had never been there. When we see all those European Cups, I felt the weight of Real Madrid’s history and responsibility,” he explained, adding: “As for the criticism, I’m very calm and focused on my work and getting the most out of the players.”
Transfer market and Vinícius’ future
The Real Madrid coach aligned himself with the club’s management by ruling out signings in the January market, highlighting his confidence in the current squad and formation: «I have a squad that I am very happy with. If we ever need something, we have excellent training.”
Regarding Vinícius Júnior’s renewal, the coach said: «That’s not up to me, it’s a matter between the club and the player. My job is to get the best out of the players. My wish is that Vinícius continues to make history at Real Madrid, of course.”
Praise for Bellingham and Brahim
The coach was full of praise for Jude Bellingham: «In the games he played with me, he demonstrated his abilities as a footballer, his leadership and personality. The effort you made the other day was wonderful. It brings together everything a Real Madrid player needs. I am delighted with him, with his mentality and his effort.”
Brahim Díaz, who was involved in the controversial CAN final between Morocco and Senegal, after missing a Panenka-like penalty, also deserved words of appreciation: «I’m very happy to have him with us. He has already demonstrated his capabilities here. He can give us a lot, he has great maturity and mentality. He is willing to help and I am very happy,” he said.
