Antwerp Winter Transfer: Dutchman Facing Exit

Glenn Bijl came to Royal Antwerp FC on a free transfer last summer, but his adventure at De Bosuil is in danger of being short-lived. The Dutch full-back seems to no longer have any prospects at The Great Old.

Bijl started his period at Antwerp with a training internship. He managed to make enough of an impression to enforce a contract. Ultimately, the former FC Emmen player signed a one-season agreement, with an option for an extra year. However, that option has still not been explored to date.

From a sporting point of view, Bijl’s contribution remained limited. The 29-year-old defender made four official appearances for Antwerp this season. He was in the starting line-up three times and came on once, but Bijl did not make a single minute under current coach and compatriot Joseph Oosting.

According to The Newspaper it is therefore unrealistic that Antwerp will release the option in Bijl’s contract in the coming months. In fact, the Belgian newspaper reports that the club would like to see the Dutchman leave during this transfer period.

If Bijl indeed says goodbye to Antwerp this winter, the club can still collect a transfer fee. Although he arrived on a free transfer last summer, due to his ongoing contract, a departure in January could yield financial benefits for the 2023 national champions.
