What was supposed to be a memorable duel between the eternal rivals ended in a minor key. A strong Wout van Aert was out in Mol together with Mathieu van der Poel. The Kempen native made a fantastic impression in the snow and in the sand, cycling-loving Flanders was already starting to dream. But one slide abruptly shattered that dream. Van Aert crashed into the ground in a corner, tried but had to limp out of the race. “His ankle is the most painful,” explains sports director Jan Boven.
