Ahn Se-young, the No. 1 badminton player in the world, is showing off her overwhelming momentum by winning major tournaments one after another in the early part of the 2026 season, but her world ranking points have not moved even a single point from 117,270. The key to this failure to widen the gap with second-place Wang Zhiyi lies in the Badminton World Federation (BWF)’s unique calculation method, the so-called ‘point defense’ system. BWF only adds up the scores of the top 10 competitions with the best performance in the past year, and for Ahn Se-young, who already won the same competition last year, this year’s win is not about gaining new points, but just ‘maintaining the existing points’.

These structural limitations are expected to become more pronounced starting with the upcoming 2026 Qingdao Asia Badminton Team Championships. China excluded major players such as Wang Zhiyi and Chen Yufei and chose to take a substantial rest and prevent exposure of their power by forming an entry centered on new players led by Gao Fangjie (10th). On the other hand, Ahn Se-young participates with a sense of responsibility as first place, but there is virtually no ranking engineering benefit that can be gained from the absence of competitors. If a competitor does not appear, their existing scores will be preserved, but even if Ahn Se-young wins, she will still be at par, and if she loses, she will have to take the disadvantageous gamble of having her total score reduced.

In the end, the current ranking system provides a harsh bondage of ‘status quo’ for Ahn Se-young, who is at the top, and an opportunity for ‘efficient pursuit’ through strategic rest and selective participation for chasers. In particular, the fact that Chen Yu-fei (94,635 points), who rose to third place, is accumulating points by taking advantage of lower-level competitions where Ahn Se-young missed is highly likely to exert psychological and tactical pressure on Ahn Se-young in future seeding. However, the unfairness of the system and the calculated actions of the pursuers cannot stop Ahn Se-young’s sprint. Ranking points do not fully capture skill, but there is only one fact that is proven on the court.
In the end, Ahn Se-young is Ahn Se-young.
