Oluwaseun Adewumi and Onur Cinel have reason to celebrate on matchday 21 of the Belgian Pro League: Cercle Brugge wins 2-0 at KVC Westerlo.
The afternoon starts in a very bad way for Westerlo. After Edgaras Utkus initially knocked with his head (4th), Emin Bayram unfortunately pushed the ball into his own net a little later (6th).
Westerlo subsequently takes command, but can hardly find any means against the guests’ compact defense.
Instead, the ÖFB legionnaire takes center stage: 20-year-old Adewumi, who is in the starting line-up, heads home an assist from Gary Magnee to make it 2-0. It is his third goal of the season in his 18th league game.
Futile running and VAR decision
The picture hardly changes in the second half either: Westerlo pushes for the connection, but Cercle goalkeeper Warleson is there for the few dangerous shots.
Westerlo briefly had hope when the video assistant checked a possible penalty situation, but decided against a penalty (86′).
Cercle Brugge has scored seven points from the last three games and is now only four points behind twelfth place, which Westerlo occupies and which entitles it to take part in the playoffs for the final qualifying place for the UEFA Conference League.
