Axel Witsel’s career will remain marked by this terrible accident with Marcin Wasilewski. His father Thierry looks back on this saga and its consequences.
By causing an open leg fracture to Marcin Wasilewski, Axel Witsel took the unhealthy atmosphere that surrounded the matches between Anderlecht and Standard up several notches around fifteen years ago. Guest by Sacha Tavolieri in the show An Offhis father Thierry was also left lastingly marked by the incident.
“This story with Marcin Wasilewski made him grow even more. I was at the stadium that evening. I saw Axel right after, he was completely discomfited. To remain polite, I wanted to tell the people who said it was voluntary to review their copy,” he remembers.
Some have crossed the line
“Fortunately the Standard was there to handle the situation. We were hated everywhere. Some supporters are so intelligent that they came to my house while I was not there,” adds the father.
The situation had become untenable: “They tried to get in, they almost smashed the front door. The mother of my children and my two daughters were there. It was unacceptable. We had to call the police and Willy De Meyer to arrange for a police unit to monitor the house while I returned.”
We had to learn lessons from all of this: “It was at that time that we decided to have private communication sessions, to work on his first strides because he wasn’t very fast in that regard. This allowed him to grow little by little. But I’m not sure that everyone recovers from this kind of situation. You have to have great strength of character.”
