The prescription of Mounjaro to athletes generated a lot of controversy and opposition: could you explain a little about the scientific reason for its use?
There was no controversy. What existed were individualized medical treatments, indicated in a timely manner after careful clinical evaluations. As described in the leaflet, patients with a BMI above 27.5 associated with comorbidities — in this specific case, joint injuries — have a formal indication for the use of the medication, always with medical supervision, as was done.
It is important to highlight that there were only two athletes recommended to follow this line. In both cases, use was made strategically, within an appropriate therapeutic window, which allowed continuous monitoring and assessment of possible side effects. The data shows that the athletes managed to lose body weight, reduce their fat percentage and improve their muscle mass, even contradicting this narrative that this behavior should be evaluated.
The entire process took place with daily monitoring, body assessments and strict control of physical composition — precisely to avoid any damage, whether to health or rehabilitation. It is important to make it clear: the medicine is not part of the list of substances prohibited by WADA, therefore there is no irregularity or risk of infringement. It is a legitimate, safe medical procedure, supported by literature and carried out within ethical and regulatory standards. There is no room for controversy, distortion or different interpretations.
