Wawrinka Retires: Grand Slam Champion Calls Time On Career

Three-time Grand Slam tournament winner Stan Wawrinka will end his tennis career in 2026. The 40-year-old Swiss announced this in a post entitled “One Last Push” on the X platform. «Every book needs an ending. It’s time to write the final chapter of my career as a professional tennis player. 2026 will be my last year on the tour,” Wawrinka wrote.

The Swiss won three Grand Slam tournaments in the era marked by his compatriot Roger Federer, the Spaniard Rafael Nadal and the Serbian Novak Djokovic – the Australian Open in 2014, the French Open in 2015 and the US Open in 2016. Wawrinka also became Olympic doubles champion alongside Federer in Beijing in 2008 and won the Davis Cup for Switzerland for the first time in 2014. He was now ranked third in the world rankings.

He celebrated his last of 16 tournament victories so far in Geneva in 2017 when he defeated Mischa Zverev in the final. In recent years, after a few injuries, things had become quieter around the Swiss, who was also nicknamed the “Marathon Man” because of some epic tennis matches and was known for his strong one-handed backhand.

“I want to continue to push my limits and finish this journey as well as possible,” Wawrinka announced, but also looked back: “I have enjoyed every part of what tennis has given me, especially the emotions that I feel when I play in front of you.”
