Stan Wawrinka (40 years old) announced this Friday on his social networks that he would end his career at the end of next season. “Every book must have an end”, writes the Swiss champion in his publication.
“Every book must have an ending. It is time to write the final chapter of my career as a professional tennis player. 2026 will be my last year on the tour.” The end has arrived for Stan Wawrinka (40 years old), who will experience his final year on the circuit in 2026. The Swiss champion, who will celebrate his 41st birthday next March, announced on Friday on his social networks that he would end his career at the end of the next season.
In recent times, the three-time Grand Slam winner (he won the Australian Open in 2014, Roland-Garros in 2015 and the US Open in 2016) had regularly mentioned his upcoming retirement, but mainly because the media had questioned him a lot about it, without revealing anything about his intentions and each time maintaining suspense. Perhaps the former world number 3, now 157th in the rankings, simply had no idea when he would put his racket away for good.
Wawrinka wanted to “play a little more” in 2026…
“Ending a career is very personal. We all have different desires, we have to feel it. We will see if there is a next season, we will already finish this one. I live in the present, I try to make the most of it”, declared last September the Vaudois having firstly built his impressive career on his dazzling one-handed backhand and touch shots which are also quite unique in their kind.
“StanTheMan”, who had also burst onto the screen during his Porte d’Auteuil coronation in 2015 due to the very original shorts for which he had opted during the fortnight, however knew that he would not last forever. “I know that the end is very near,” he admitted after his elimination in Paris last May.
The winner of the Davis Cup in 2014 with Switzerland and of sixteen tournaments – including the last at home in Geneva in 2017 – then nourished the hope of being able to say goodbye in 2026: “I hope to play a little more next year”, Wawrinka did not hide, who will therefore not be deprived of this pleasure. The future retiree assures that he intends to continue to “push (his) limits” and “end this last chapter on the best possible note”.
