Vigo Sports Grants: €50,000 for 29 Leaders

The tenth edition of the municipal support program for high-level sports, aimed at athletes in individual, couple or trio modalities, reached a total of 29 athletes due to its successes in the 24/25 season, twelve of them women.

With the Marco Museum as the setting on Thursday afternoon, the usual place for the meeting of the mayor, Abel Caballero, the sports councilor, Manel Fernández, and the benefited Vigo athletes, the councilor applauded the great season from all of themwhom he described as “sports leaders.”

Thirteen modalities represented (athletics, badminton, fencing, judo, swimming, orienteering, inline skating, squash, taekwondo, tennis, Olympic shooting, triathlon and sailing), with an almost overwhelming majority from sailing (eight sailors) received municipal recognition. The mayor also told them that he felt “very proud” of them “because you are the best,” and guaranteed them that The Vigo government will continue to support them and adding “training places” because “we are a healthy Council, we have resources and a General Plan.”

With these twenty-nine grants, the total of this program already exceeds three hundred subsidies of various economic nature (303) since 2016, when the councilor launched this idea accepted by the councilor.

On this occasion, based on their results, those who have reached the maximum subsidy of 2,500 euros have been Susana Rodríguez Gacio (triathlon), Jhoan Sebastián Guzmán (inline skating), Pablo Cabello (sailing), Martín de la Puente (tennis), Laura Martínez (judo), Judith Rodríguez (fencing) and Juan Antonio Saavedra (Olympic shooting). This year’s aid has ranged between that maximum figure and 1,000 euros.

They complete the list of elite athletes 2025 Esther Navarrete y Jorge Román (Atletics), the Brothers Gabriel and Jacobo Fernandez (Badmiton), Laura Juliet War (stream), Juan Ferrón and Miguel Martínez Novoa (born) Marta Domínguez (Squash), Celia García and Tomérón.
