Caracas, 12 Dic. AVN.- The Venezuelan U-17 men’s team suffered its second defeat in the FIBA 2025 South American Championship, falling to Brazil with a score of 79-94, at the Olympic Training Center in Asunción, Paraguay, as reported by the Venezuelan Basketball Federation.
The Venezuelan starting quintet was made up of Yonaiker Ecker, Richard Segovia, Julio Vásquez, José Lara, Samuel Niño (C) and Kevin Gutiérrez. Pietro Melo, Pedro Souza, Joao Neves, Eduardo Santos and Cristian Ferreira started for Brazil, under the direction of Fernando De Oliveira.
The start of the game was marked by quick possessions and long-distance shots. Venezuela tried to take advantage of offensive transitions, while Brazil took advantage of its strength in the paint. The first quarter ended 23-25 in favor of the Brazilians. Juan Perdomo and Deiker Torres stood out in the Creole offense, although Brazil closed the first half with a 41-48 advantage, supported by their dominance of rebounds, with 34 catches, 15 of them offensive, and ample production in second chances.
In the second half, Venezuela sought to react with doubles from Lara and Vásquez, as well as triples from Segovia and Perdomo. However, Brazil remained in control thanks to the production of Melo, Souza and Santos. A stretch of three consecutive triples, two from Melo and one from Caio Mathias, opened the final difference of 68-84 with five minutes remaining. The national team could not recover despite attempts to maintain the pace at the end of the match.
Among those highlighted by Venezuela were Julio Vásquez with 16 points, three rebounds and four assists; Juan Perdomo with 12 points, three rebounds and a block; Deiker Torres with 10 points and three assists; Richard Segovia with 10 points and three rebounds; Samuel Niño with nine points and seven rebounds; and José Lara with six points and nine sacks.
Venezuela will close its participation in the group stage this Friday, December 12 against Chile, at 4:30 pm (Venezuela time), in a match that will be officially broadcast by FIBA through YouTube.FIN/AVN/ GG/ RA/ RA/
