The fun is gone

“Fem van Empel has decided to put her professional cycling career on hold for an indefinite period,” Visma-Lease a Bike announced around noon on Friday. The news did not come as an absolute surprise, which does not alter the fact that it did of course have a significant impact.

“This is a well-considered decision that I feel good about. Currently, both the motivation and the pleasure that I have had in cycling for years are missing. I wanted to be honest about this with the team. For now this is the best choice,” Van Empel noted.

“During the Koppenbergcross, my body and my head gave a very clear signal. I am someone who does not give up easily, but subconsciously a decision was already made there,” it was also stated on the club website.

Support from Wout

Van Empel also says he is ready for a new chapter, which suggests that this decision is final rather than temporary. “I am very grateful for all the support I have received from the team, my family and the fans and look forward to what the future holds.”

A courageous decision, from someone who was already particularly well-liked within the cycling world and its audience. Van Empel receives a lot of support, including from Wout van Aert. He shared the message on his Instagram stories, a clear sign of support and respect for his (ex) teammate.
