Fernando Martín, coach of the women’s team of Valencia, from Spain, died along with three members of his family after the sinking of the vessel they were on in Indonesia.
In a statement, the Spanish club declared that it was “deeply saddened by the death of Fernando Martin and three of his children, in the tragic boating accident in Indonesia, as confirmed by local authorities.”
Indonesian and Spanish authorities reported on Saturday (27) that Martin and three of his children were missing after the sinking of the vessel in which they were traveling, with 11 people on board, amid extreme weather conditions last Friday (26), in the Strait of Padar Island, near the island of Labuan Bajo, a popular tourist spot.
The searches continued on Sunday morning (28), Fathur Rahman, coordinator of the Indonesian search and rescue agency’s mission in the region, told Reuters.
Real Madrid also sent condolences to Martin, 44, a former Spanish second division player who was appointed coach of Valencia’s women’s B team this year.
His wife and daughter, as well as four crew members and a tour guide, were rescued and are safe, according to the search and rescue team’s statement.
