Uganda vs Nigeria: Penalty Costs Uganda, Nigeria Qualifies

Missed penalty hampers Uganda’s complete turnaround and makes Paul Put disappointed, Nigeria has already secured qualification

Paul Put and Uganda are stuck at 1-1 against Tanzania after a rollercoaster. Uganda leveled 10 minutes before the end and had the chance to score the winning goal from the spot at the start of extra time, but Paul Put’s team was left in delirium. After the 1-1, Uganda’s chances of qualification dwindled.

After the defeat against Tunisia, the knife was more or less at Uganda’s throat and Tanzania could not afford too many foils after the loss against Nigeria.

That pressure paralyzed Tanzania in particular, which barely had anything to say in the first half, but took the lead on the hour mark. A penalty brought them one step closer to a historic first victory in the African Cup of Nations.

Uganda put a stop to that 10 minutes before the end with substitute Uche Ikpeazu’s equalizer, but they still let the full spoils slip through their hands.

At the start of extra time, Allan Okello – during a deluge – wildly fired over a penalty.

1-1: Uganda and Tanzania remain in the running, but have not made it easier for themselves.

In their group, Nigeria is already certain of the next phase. Nigeria beat Tunisia 3-2. Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi and Ademola Lookman signed for a 3-0 score. The latter also provided 2 assists. Tunisia softened to 3-2, but had to fight on the final day.
