The Latvian U-18 hockey team, preparing for the world championship in the elite group, which will take place in Slovakia in the spring, is training in Riga, and then three test matches against Norway will be played in Jelgava.
The team’s head coach Oleg Sorokin and his partners have gathered 29 hockey players in this team meeting. Several young people play abroad, while a third represent the local Riga Hockey School team in the Baltic Championship. Training will be held in the usual environment for only one more day, but test matches are already scheduled from Thursday.
“Many players on the right hand (grip of the stick), I think there have never been so many in one camp. It is pleasant and immediately much more interesting – a different approach and tactical solutions,” said Sorokin in an interview with Latvian Television, for whom this year at the helm of the U-18 team is different. In the previous seven years, he trained the base team of the Riga Hockey School in parallel with the youth team, but this year he is working with younger hockey players in its system.
“I might [tādā veidā] I understand better what to me [taktiskajos] it will be necessary to change the drawings, seeing what happens to those boys,” the coach believes.
At the end of April next year, the Latvian U-18 national team will play for the eighth time in a row among the ten best units of the elite division, and this time the upcoming youth championship will take place in Europe, in two Slovak cities – Bratislava and Pištjani.
