Strasbourg Top Ranking: Aberdeen Overthrown

Strasbourg won this Thursday during the 5th day of the Conference League against the Scots Aberdeen.

The good form in the Conference League is confirmed. Strasbourg, with a reshuffled team, brought back a new European success from Aberdeen (1-0) on Thursday, synonymous with first place in the Conference League, and qualification for the round of 16 even before the final day.

In bad shape in Ligue 1 after three defeats in a row, the Alsatians refueled in the north-east of Scotland to bring their total to thirteen units. This places them out of reach in particular of Crystal Palace (9th, 9 pts), their previous victim and first team outside the Top 8 directly qualifying for the eighth.

They will finish the league phase next week at Meinau against the Icelanders of Breidablik without any pressure, except that of maintaining the beautiful European history.

Godo illustrious

Coach Liam Rosenior had a reshuffled team at kick-off on Thursday, out of constraint (Emmanuel Emegha and Abdoul Ouattara forfeited) and to spare his troops before the reception of Lorient on Sunday in Ligue 1. This allowed Martial Godo in particular to shine by scoring (35th, 1-0), forcing the opposing goalkeeper to make good saves afterwards (53rd, 57th) and obtaining a penalty, missed by Ismaël Doukouré (72nd).

On his goal, the 22-year-old winger took advantage of a superb whipped pass from Samuel Amo-Ameyaw in depth and a missed interception from a defender, Nicky Devlin, the same one who conceded the penalty. Strasbourg recovered from a timid and messy first quarter of an hour, marked by great technical failure.

The visitors were saved from this sluggish start by Andrew Omibamidele, author of a decisive interception after a ball lost in the middle, then by the video assistance which detected a hand from Mats Knoester, scorer from a corner (14th). Racing’s success was also written thanks to goalkeeper Mike Penders, imperial on a header from Mats Knoester (40th) and in front of Marko Lazetic (52nd), on either side of half-time.

This now makes one draw and four victories for the current eighth in L1 in the Conference League, the third European Cup. The Aberdeen “Dons”, with only two points, are already eliminated.
