Thiago Silva still has energy to offer European football. The former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain defender has terminated his contract with Fluminense, his training club where he returned in July 2024, the Brazilian team announced on Wednesday. The former captain of the Seleçao (113 caps) was linked with the Carioca club until next June but aspires, according to local media, to return to Europe.
“Thiago Silva, who returned to the club last year as a legend of world football, leaves behind a legacy of dedication and love for Fluminense,” the team said in a statement, specifying that the player had terminated his contract on Tuesday. The 41-year-old defender began his career as a junior with the Carioca club in 1998 before returning for the first time as a pro from 2006 to 2008.
25 matches for the “Flu”
He returned there in the summer of 2024 for a two-year contract after leaving Chelsea, whose jersey he wore more than 150 times and with whom he won the Champions League, the Club World Cup and the European Super Cup, despite an empty record on the national scene in England. Considered one of the best defenders of his generation, the Brazilian had previously played for AC Milan (2009-2012) and PSG (2012-2020).
For his new stint at Fluminense, “O Monstro” (the Monster), as he is nicknamed in Brazil, played 25 matches, scoring two goals. However, he leaves the club, currently 5th in the championship, with a mixed record. The “Flu” has not won a title since his return and was stopped by Chelsea in the semi-finals of the 2025 Club World Cup in the United States. In selection, Thiago Silva participated in four World Cups, in South Africa in 2010, in Brazil in 2014, in Russia in 2018 and in Qatar in 2022.
