Garbine Muguruza won two Grand Slam events in 2024

On December 28th there will be a new edition of the “Battle of the Sexes” between Nick Kyrgios and Aryna Sabalenka in Dubai. Not least in view of the Australians’ recent injury concerns, some observers do not see the world number one from Belarus as completely without a chance. The Spanish Garbine Muguruza apparently has a completely different opinion on this matter.

“I think even a junior would have beaten me when I was number one,” said Muguruza in a conversation with “Cadena COPE”. She felt the big differences between men and women even in training sets with sparring partners who didn’t play tennis professionally.

Experience from duels with her brothers

The reason for this is “many things,” specifically Muguruza mentioned physicality, among other things. She also always lost against her two brothers, who never made a breakthrough on the tour. “A man without a ranking can be much better than a woman in the top ten,” said Muguruza.

She is excited to see what will happen in the game between Kyrgios and Sabalenka, said Muguruza. The Spaniard won the French Open in 2016 and Wimbledon in 2017 and announced her retirement from top sport in April 2024. From next year she will act as tournament director of the 1000 event in Madrid.
