After three editions in the Middle East in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the World Tennis League exhibition event moved on to India, where four teams will continue to vie for the title from December 17th to 20th at the SM Krishna Tennis Stadium in Bangalore.
At the start of the group phase, the Hawks met the Maverick Kites. After the Kites actually expected the Australian Nick Kyrgios in the singles, he had to be replaced by the Indian Dhakshineswar Suresh, who put up a great fight with the Canadian Davis Cup winner Denis Shapovalov, but had to admit defeat 5:7. In the women’s singles there was the first Ukrainian duel of the day, in which Elena Svitolina also won 7:5 against Marta Kostyuk in favor of the Hawks. After Kyrgios achieved his team’s first win in doubles with his Indian partner Suresh against Shapovalov/Bhambri, Svitolina sealed the Hawks’ 25:21 team victory alongside the Indian Rajeshwaran against Kostyuk/Raina.
The individual match between the Eagles and the Falcons was evenly balanced. While Paula Badosa from Spain, playing for the Eagles, had to bow to Poland’s Magda Linette 4:6, her team colleague Gael Monfils from France defeated former world number one Daniil Medvedev 6:3. Although the Russian took revenge alongside Indian doubles legend Rohan Bopanna in the men’s doubles with 6:2 against Monfils/Nagal, he was no longer able to prevent the Falcons’ final 16:18 defeat thanks to Badosa/Nagal’s clear 6:1 mixed win against Linette/Bopanna.
The World Tennis League in Bangalore will continue with the remaining group games over the next two days before the two best-placed teams play on December 20th. will meet in the final.
