Marissa Hafezan defeated Nguyen Thi Miu Ly (transliteration) from Vietnam 5-3 in the final of the women’s under-55kg individual competition (Kumite) held on Friday (December 12) and won the gold medal. The last time our country won a gold medal in karate at the SEA Games was back in 1993, and the last medal it won was a bronze medal in 2011, 14 years ago.

Marisa responded to “Lianhe Zaobao” after the game and said: “This achievement makes me very happy and proud. I have worked hard to prepare for the competition and I am really grateful.”

This gold medal is of great significance to Marisa: “First of all, this is Singapore’s first karate gold medal in this SEA Games. It means that I have successfully returned from shoulder surgery, and it is a tangible reward for all the hard work I have put in over the years.”

On her way to advance, she defeated Maryanne Jenelle of the Philippines and Sysoubanthong Manyvanh of Laos.

Jiu-jitsu Lin Tianzhi wins silver medal and sets personal best record

In the men’s Jiu-Jitsu sub-77kg final on the same day, Chinese player Lin Tianzhi lost to the host player Aunjai Chanwit 0-4, and only won the silver medal, which was his best personal result at the SEA Games.

Lin Tianzhi once missed a medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games. He told Lianhe Zaobao at the time that his next goal is to win a gold medal at the SEA Games in Thailand. After winning the silver medal, he said: “I feel that I was expected to achieve my goal today, but the result was not satisfactory. I am not satisfied, but the silver medal will inspire me to work harder in the future.”

Just the day before, Lin Tianrun, his younger brother who is 4 years younger than Lin Tianzhi, was unexpectedly eliminated in the first round; Lin Tianzhi admitted that he was not affected by this: “We have reached this level, and we all understand that the game may be full of variables.”

Lin Tianzhi defeated Polput Kampanart from Thailand and Vietnam’s Nguyen Dal Loc in the semi-finals and semi-finals. In the finals, he was once behind 0-2, and then got into a hard fight with Canwei. In the end, his opponent seized the opportunity to score, and he finished second.

Lin Tianzhi competed in the SEA Games for the first time in 2019 and won the bronze medal in the under-69kg category, so winning the silver this time is a step up.

Gold medalist Canwei also completed his revenge in this battle. Another Chinese player, Chen Shijie, defeated Chan Wei in a jiu-jitsu fight in the same weight class on Wednesday (10th) and won the first gold medal for the Chinese jiu-jitsu team in this SEA Games.

In judo, Chinese female player Zhen Yuxuan, who ranked fifth in the last SEA Games, also made a breakthrough. In the women’s under 70 kg competition, she defeated Pabulayan Khrizzie of the Philippines through Ippon and won the bronze medal.
