The president of SantosMarcelo Teixeira, threw a bucket of cold water on the fans who expected to see Gabigol back to the club in 2026.
At the beginning of the week, the ESPN brought the fish was interested in the attacker’s return, but the financial issue was the main obstacle. The club would not be willing to invest to remove Gabigol from Cruise – the contract between the parties runs until 2028.
And that was confirmed. In an exclusive interview with ESPNMarcelo Teixeira revealed that Santos placed Gabigol as a priority before signing Neymarbut the attacker opted for Cruzeiro.
Now, the only possibility for Gabigol to wear the Santos shirt in 2026 is to fit into the club’s financial reality, which should not happen.
“The priority was his arrival, before Neymar. It was important for Santos to count on him. We made a bold, market proposal. He chose Cruzeiro to compete in more competitions. Today it is a different reality”, said Teixeira.
“He is a good player, identified with Santos. But the investment priority is not the same. When you open a conversation and you notice that the intention continues to be at a higher level, Santos has no conditions. There is no way to continue with the negotiation. We could make a proposal in today’s financial reality”, he added.
Gabigol’s future at Cruzeiro was put into question after being eliminated for the Corinthians in the semi-final of Brazilian Cup. The striker missed the penalty that would have classified the Minas Gerais team at the Neo Química Arena.
In protest, fans vandalized the wall of Toca da Raposa that had the image of Gabigol. Even so, vice-president Pedro Junio hinted that the player will remain at the club until 2026.
