A very positive result for the Rebelles in all sporting disciplines
By: Stéphane Fortier
The Rebelles du Cégep de Sorel-Tracy is not just about hockey since no less than 150 student-athletes divided into 11 teams wore the College colors with dignity during the fall session.
Badminton, cross-country, swimming, indoor soccer, basketball and volleyball teams also include CEGEP athletes. “Overall, 13.3% of our students invest every week in practicing their sport while pursuing their higher education goals. At the end of the session, it is important to recognize their efforts and all the work accomplished,” says the sports student life advisor at Cégep de Sorel-Tracy, Myriam Shea-Blais.
Badminton and basketball
In badminton, within the team of six boys and two girls led by new coach Christophe Delhougne, Mathys Dubé distinguished himself by reaching the D2 men’s singles final of the first tournament, before winning the D2 men’s doubles final, with veteran Matty Desmarais.
In women’s basketball, the Rebelles, integrated into the Centre-du-Québec D2 League of the RSEQ, are made up of 10 players led by Jasmine Martel, France Lanoie and Alexandre Martel. They occupy first place in Pool B with a record of three victories and as many defeats at mid-season. “It’s a team in full progress that has some nice surprises in store for us,” describes Myriam Shea-Blais.
And for boys? As for the girls, they are back in the D2 League. “Despite a last place in the rankings, the 12 players show intensity, perseverance and take on the challenges game after game. By focusing on teamwork, the troops of René Laforest and Louis-Georges Mandeville can aspire to a better end to the season with the addition of new players who will line up with them this winter,” believes the student sports life advisor.
Cross country and swimming
On the cross-country side, seven boys and eight girls trained this fall to participate in the three races of the Northeast cross-country league. Coaches Éric Fréchette and Benoît Drouin led the athletes to work hard to achieve their personal goals, particularly those of Mégane Lavallée, who marked the season by breaking the Rebelles record by finishing in 14th place.e rank of the season. She repeated the feat at the RSEQ Provincial Championship, reaching an impressive 14e place.
In swimming, Kim Perron-Coulombe’s team took part in two competitions this fall and several of the 11 athletes improved their times in at least one swim. Some have already reached standards for the RSEQ Provincial Championship in April.
Soccer et volleyball
In women’s and men’s indoor soccer, the two teams are led by Serge Dufour on the men’s side and Patrick Turgeon on the women’s side, accompanied by Raphaël Cournoyer. After a training camp all fall, both teams will begin their season this winter with four tournaments and they are aiming for access to the league championship. “The coaches anticipate great successes,” reports Myriam Shea-Blais.
On the D2 women’s volleyball side, with seven recruits and seven veterans, the team continues to progress under the direction of Martin Paul and Frédéric Patenaude. “Efforts are placed on the work and seriousness that this level of competition requires, while maintaining pleasure as a driving force for performance. Currently in eighth place, the team is aiming for the playoffs,” Ms. Shea-Blais tells us. Come to the Cégep on January 25 to see them at work.
For the boys, guided by Laurie Champagne-Généreux, Bruno Chevalier and Benoît Courchesne, the team experienced impressive progress. With the arrival of seven new talents alongside seven veterans who are familiar with the league level, the group is moving forward with determination. “Despite a seventh position, the five victories in the last seven matches demonstrate all the work and it will be interesting to follow them after the Holidays,” reveals Myriam Shea-Blais.
In mixed volleyball, ultimately, a majority of recruits make up this group which focuses on the development and enjoyment of volleyball. They are led by the new team of coaches made up of Jean-Christophe Morin, Manuel Klanten and Antoine Picard-Duquette “Their objective is to strengthen the coaching and ensure individual and team progress and the participation in the semi-final reached during the last tournament is great proof of this”, concludes Ms. Shea-Blais, who would like to congratulate her student-athletes for their commitment both on a sporting and academic level.
