NEC Nijmegen does not fear a winter departure of Kodai Sano. Earlier this week it was announced that PSV is looking at the Japanese midfielder from the number four of the Eredivisie in the event of a possible departure of Joey Veerman.
Yet NEC coach Dick Schreuder is not afraid of the midfielder leaving in the winter. “I think Sano is on the list of many clubs, so I am not afraid of that,” he says Good morning Eredivisie op ESPN. The coach is asked why PSV would like to add the Japanese to the selection.
“Because of what he does. He still has to improve and become more dangerous in and around the opponent’s sixteen meters. You can see it here: he has an excellent shot,” said Schreuder while seeing Sano’s goals in the NEC shirt. “What we have done with him this year is that he has to dribble a lot more, so he can get higher up the pitch.”
That pays off, according to the coach. Still, Schreuder would prefer to keep Sano in Nijmegen for a while. “You never want to sell your best players, but ultimately you have to deal with the club and its finances. You hope that it doesn’t happen in the middle of the season. There will be a process for Sano that he will eventually go,” said the NEC coach.
