PIOMBINO. He was sentenced to one year, six months and 15 days in prison and to pay a provisional amount of 1,500 euros, as well as legal costs, for having beaten his mother’s partner to death. This is the sentence after the brutal beating with punches, kicks, baseball bats and knives that occurred on 6 September 2021 on the corner of via Togliatti and via Di Vittorio, in Salivoli, for the twenty-six-year-old Ukrainian Ivan Stepanenkodefended by the lawyer Barbara Luceriwhile the fifty-four year old from Piombino was acquitted Baldassarre Ruocco (originally from Naples and at the time of the events engaged to the young man’s mother), assisted by the lawyer Elena Parietti. The latter, in fact the victim of the beatings, was nevertheless accused in the proceedings which ended yesterday in the first instance in the Livorno criminal court in via Falcone e Borsellino.
Stepanenko was accused of causing bodily harm, carrying weapons or objects capable of offending and threatening. Ruocco, however, was acquitted for the first two crimes: for carrying weapons, while for the injuries the judge was unable to proceed, given that the twenty-six year old never filed a complaint against him. The showdown between the two, the result of a long series of misunderstandings, dates back to September 6, 2021. And it happened in the middle of the street. With a baseball bat, later found by the police near the site of the attack, Stepanenko forced the man to be admitted to the general medicine department of the Villamarina hospital, with a final prognosis of 40 days. Displaced fractures of the right cheekbone, of the nasal septum, of the jaw, of the right orbit and lacerated-contused wounds on the head, on the nose and on the left eyebrow arch according to the emergency room report, with injuries also to the chest and a swelling on the right eyelid, while the young Ukrainian – again based on clinical documents – emerged with “a head injury, an injury to the right wrist and a wound to the right leg”.
Final report: one week and immediate discharge from hospital. After years of trial, the sentence was delivered yesterday morning: Ruocco acquitted, Stepanenko – who is currently in Sughere – sentenced to one year, six months and 15 days in prison and to pay a provisional amount of 1,500 euros, as well as legal costs.
