A week after his surprising dismissal from Club Brugge, Nicky Hayen has responded for the first time. The coach speaks about support from the fans, his surprise at the timing and a statement from chairman Bart Verhaeghe.
Nicky Hayen was suddenly fired a week ago as coach of Club Brugge, where Ivan Leko quickly took over. He responded to his dismissal at Het Laatste Nieuws. Hayen likes that he gets a lot of support.
“The compassion of the Club fans, but also the supporters of other teams, gives me a very warm feeling. I did not have the feeling that it was over, you could also see that in the reaction of the players,” the trainer opened.
Hayen is surprised by the timing and communication surrounding dismissal
Thanks to the mediocre football and the loss of points in recent weeks, he was able to give it a place quickly. “On a human level it is of course a shame, I did not see it coming at all. After the match on STVV I spoke to the chairman and there was no signal that it would stop.”
“So I was really surprised when I had to go upstairs in the late afternoon and heard the news. But I am old and mature enough to know that it sometimes happens in football. Unfortunately, it has now happened to me,” Hayen continued.

He also commented on the statement of chairman Bart Verhaeghe. He said that Hayen should be grateful to Club for the opportunity he was given. “Anyone who knows me knows that I am grateful every day. After the 1 out of 9 at the beginning of last season, I thanked the board for their trust. I don’t think he really meant it that way, but I was sorry to hear it.”
