In the round of 16 of the women’s singles badminton tournament, Nguyen Thuy Linh, seeded No. 4 and great hope of the Vietnamese team, faced Amartya Pratiwi, a much lower ranked opponent, currently 82nd in the world.
In the first set, despite being considered the favorite, Nguyen Thuy Linh started somewhat carelessly and lacked concentration, allowing Amartya Pratiwi to take a lead of up to 15-9 at times, putting her in a difficult chasing position.
However, thanks to her composure and great experience, Vietnam’s number one player quickly regained control of the match, scoring a series of crucial points and turning the tide, winning the first set with a score of 21-16.
Starting the second set, Thùy Linh once again had a difficult start, quickly losing the initiative. Amartya Pratiwi’s agile game posed many difficulties for her, forcing the Vietnamese player to constantly chase the score.
At one point, the Indonesian representative even widened the gap, reaching 20-17, putting Thuy Linh in danger of having to play a deciding set.
With his constant efforts and great experience, Thùy Linh gradually narrowed the gap and equalized the score at 20-20, reviving the hope of finishing the match in two sets.
Thùy Linh and her coach constantly exchanged quick comments off the court, adjusting their tactics as she was unexpectedly chased by her opponent at crucial moments in the match.
However, during crucial and decisive exchanges, the young Indonesian player was more precise and tenacious.
Amartya Pratiwi scored two crucial points to close the set with a score of 22-20, bringing the match to a 1-1 tie after two sets.
Starting the decisive third set, Thùy Linh regained her concentration, tried to control the pace and quickly scored the first points to boost morale after two closely contested sets.
Thùy Linh’s continued efforts to score points often caused her opponent to lose control, forcing Amartya Pratiwi to change pace to avoid being drawn into the Vietnamese player’s style of play.
However, Amartya Pratiwi then played explosively, constantly increasing the tempo and putting pressure on his opponent, before quickly wrapping up the deciding set with a convincing 21-14 victory.
In the end, the young Indonesian player defeated Nguyen Thuy Linh with a score of 2-1 (16-21, 22-20, 21-14), thus convincingly qualifying for the next round.
