The NFL is the largest league in American football. But who are the biggest teams in the NFL? We introduce you to the most successful franchises.

Berlin – The Chiefs and always the Chiefs. The team from Kansas City dominates with five Super Bowl appearances in the last six years (as of September 2025). NFL. But that wasn’t always the case.

This text introduces you to the most successful teams in NFL history.

Green Bay Packers are the most successful NFL franchise

The Green Bay Packers are the most successful team in NFL history. The team from the state of Wisconsin has celebrated a total of 15 NFL championships since 1920, four of them since the beginning of the Super Bowl era. This puts the Packers in fifth place in the pure Super Bowl rankings.

Green Bay last won the title in 2011. Led by quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rodgers, the Packers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 31:25. Since then, they have reached the playoffs eleven times (as of September 2025), but they have not made it to the Super Bowl.

Most Super Bowl wins: Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots share first place

The most successful teams of the Super Bowl era are the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers with six titles each. The Patriots were in the Super Bowl more often, but they also lost five of their eleven final appearances. The Steelers, on the other hand, won six of eight finals.

But while New England won each of its rings with the successful duo of head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady (six titles between 2002 and 2019), the Steelers had two dominant phases. They collected four titles between 1975 and 1980 with legendary quarterback Terry Bradshaw, and two more in 2006 and 2009 with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers each with five Super Bowl triumphs

With eight Super Bowl appearances each but only five titles, the Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers are tied for third place in the Super Bowl rankings.

The Cowboys were the measure of all things in the NFL in the early 1990s. Between 1993 and 1996, led by quarterback Troy Aikman, they went to the Super Bowl three times in four years and won all three. Since then, “America’s Team” has been waiting for a deep playoff run.

The 49ers, on the other hand, have repeatedly reached the Super Bowl in recent years, but after winning all of their first five final appearances (1982 to 1995), they have suffered three defeats recently. They lost to the Baltimore Ravens in 2013 and to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020 and 2024.

The team of the last few years: the Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs celebrated their second and fourth Super Bowl wins against the 49ers. In between, they beat the Philadelphia Eagles (2023), against whom they lost the rematch for the Vince Lombardi Trophy in 2025. These three victories were orchestrated by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who was named Super Bowl MVP three times. Overall, the Chiefs have been in five of the last six Super Bowls (as of September 2025), making them the dominant team in recent years. Kansas won its first Super Bowl in 1970.

In addition to the Packers and Chiefs, the New York Giants also have four Super Bowl victories.
