NFL Fan Punch: Metcalf Incident & Steelers Update

The Pittsburgh Steelers receiver, despite the incident, remained on the field for the rest of the game

December 22 – 3.02pm – MILANO

What happened in the NFL during the match between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Detroit Lions is incredible: during the second quarter of the game, television images immortalized the Steelers receiver DK Metcalf who stopped to talk to an opposing fan standing near the banister and, after having pulled him closer by his shirt, he punched him full in the face to the disbelief of the spectators who were just a few meters from the scene.

what happened

The fan was wearing a blue wig and, as CBS reported, was holding a yellow No. 4 Pittsburgh jersey that initially caught Metcalf’s attention before the altercation. Interviewed by Detroit Free Pressthe fan reportedly said: “I called Metcalf by his full name, DeKaylin Zecharius Metcalf, causing the scene you saw. He grabbed me and ripped my shirt. I’m a little shaken up by what happened.”

Tracy Wolfson, CBS reporter, told it like this: “Metcalf approached him, the fan said something to him that he must not have liked given how he attacked him. None of the other Steelers players said anything to him.” The match officials did not see the fact and therefore Metcalf, a giant of 1.94 and 104 kilos, remained on the field making 4 receptions for 42 yards, leading his team to victory. Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin also intervened post-match: “I heard about it, but I haven’t seen the scene and I haven’t spoken to DK yet, so I have no comments to make.”
