The Brazilian soccer star Neymar managed to stay in the league with FC Santos, but now needs surgery on his left knee.
The 33-year-old confirmed this after the 3-0 win against Cruzeiro. Neymar, for whom Paris SG paid a record fee of 222 million euros to FC Barcelona in 2017, did not provide any details about the injury.
He hopes to get into Brazil’s squad for the World Cup. However, he has not yet been taken into account since Carlo Ancelotti took office in May.
Injurious past
“I came here to help as much as I could. It’s been a tough few weeks for me. I thank everyone who supported me. Without them I wouldn’t have been able to play these games because of my knee injury. I have to rest and then the knee operation is due,” said Neymar.
The offensive star has repeatedly struggled with injuries in the past; in October 2023 he suffered a torn cruciate ligament in the World Cup qualifier against Uruguay.
Neymar turned up the heat in the last few games
At Santos, in the final phase of the season, he was one of the key players who led world star Pelé’s former club to stay in the league.
On the third-to-last matchday he scored the lead in a 3-0 win against Sport Recife, he even managed a hat trick to make it 3-0 against Juventude and he was an impressive playmaker against Cruzeiro. Since returning to Santos, he has scored a total of eight goals in 19 games.
