Two of them were champions with the Red Devils of Mexico in the Mexican Softball League at the beginning of the year 2025.
Nine Mexican baseball players made history in the country, after being selected in the Draft for the first season of the United States Women’s Professional Baseball League, for the four franchises that will make up the circuit that begins on August 1, 2026, such as: New York, Boston, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Of those nine players, two belong to the champion team of the Mexican Women’s Softball League, Diablos Rojos del México; third baseman Edith de Leija Sánchez, who will play with the New York ninth, and pitcher Rosa María del Castillo, who was chosen by San Francisco.
Currently both players They carry out a preparation camp at the Alfredo Harp Helú Baseball Academy in Oaxaca, heading into the next campaign. Edith from Tamaulipas and Del Castillo from Puebla talked about his experience in the draft to play professional baseball, a sport similar to softball but it has its differences.
“Well, the truth is I am very happy for having been in the draft and being selected, As Edith said, they are different sports, but it helps us stay active, to continue preparing ourselves and that, without a doubt, is a dream for many of us who start in this sport.”
De Leija continued with the same line about the differences between one discipline and another, but he assured that there are not so many problems going from softball to baseball, since he assured that the subject of the ball is something important for her to have a better vision of it.
“Well, personally, Before, it was very difficult for me to change the sports switch, because baseball is longer distances, Maybe right now it’s like the wave grabs her more and it’s more than anything the batting timing and the position of the arms. Yes, it is a little different, but I still think that over time you get used to it and the switch automatically changes.. I think that for me personally, it is easier to come from softball to baseball because I see the ball better or I have much more contact with beige.”
The former players of the Red Devils of Mexico are not the only Mexicans to be involved in the draft of the United States Women’s Professional Baseball League, since there were also other baseball players like the catcher Esthela Segovia, who passed through the Bravas de León.
