Suara.com – The Indonesian women’s national volleyball team started impressively at the 2025 SEA Games. Compete at the Huamark Indoor Stadium, Bangkok, Wednesday (10/12) WIB.
Marcos Sugiyama’s team appeared dominant and beat Malaysia with a landslide victory in three straight sets: 25-12, 25-12, 25-16.
The women’s national team coach, Marcos Sugiyama, fully appreciated the fighting spirit and determination of his players in the first Group B match.
According to him, the opening match is always a challenge because the players have to overcome anxiety, high expectations and a lack of information regarding the opponent’s strength.
“This is the victory we are targeting. The first match is usually full of anxiety, expectations and adaptation to teams with limited information. Starting tomorrow the players can appear more relaxed and more precise in carrying out strategies,” said Sugiyama, quoted from the official PBVSI release.
The Japanese coach assessed that the Red and White team was starting to show a better understanding of the playing system he implemented.
During the preparation period, Indonesia focused on strengthening fast attack patterns, improving communication between players, and improving coordination in defensive and attacking transitions.
“The speed of attacks increases, the focus on the main actions is maintained. We want to have a balance of reception, aggressive serving, and clearer communication so that the relationship between defender, attacker and setter is more unified,” continued Sugiyama.
Indonesia’s dominance was visible from the start of the match. In the first and second sets, Megawati Hangestri et al appeared fierce through a variety of fast attacks, accurate serves and solid blocks.

Malaysia had difficulty getting out of pressure and repeatedly lost points due to their own mistakes.
Entering the third set, Indonesia continued to maintain the tempo of the game even though they tried to rotate players.
Malaysia put up tougher resistance but were still unable to catch up, so the final set again belonged to the Garuda squad.
An additional three full points from this victory put Indonesia at the top of Group B. Meanwhile, Malaysia had to settle for being in the bottom position after suffering a heavy defeat in the opening match.
With this convincing victory, Sugiyama hopes that the players can maintain focus and improve the quality of their game in the next matches.
Consistency, according to him, is an important factor if Indonesia wants to reach the semifinals and compete for medals.
