Mauricio Pereyra Retirement: Nacional Title Ends Career

Mauricio Pereyra retires from professional football. The 35-year-old midfielder decided to end his extensive career after winning the 2025 Uruguayan Championship with the National Football Club.

The tricolor team officially announced the midfielder’s decision, after the culmination of the title obtained last Sunday against Peñarol in the Gran Parque Central.

“Not only is a player retiring, but a fan who fulfilled his dream of defending and becoming a champion with the shirt of his loves is saying goodbye. A reference on the field, but even more so off it, where the true leaders are seen. Thank you, Mauri, for your football, your commitment and your love for these colors. Nacional will always be your home,” expressed the La Blanqueada institution through its official account on the social network X.

During the last season, Pereyra was losing his footing in the tricolor team. After playing 11 games of the 15 in the Apertura Tournament and 5 of the 7 in the Intermediate Tournament, ‘Mauri’ played only 5 games in the Clausura Tournament, he played the last 3 minutes of the first leg final against Peñarol in the Champion of the Century and did not enter the return match at the Park.

Pereyra trained in the training divisions of Nacional and debuted in the First Division in 2009, a stage in which he won the 2009 Apertura Tournament, the 2011 Clausura Tournament and the 2008-2009 and 2010-2011 Uruguayan Championships.

He later emigrated to play for Lanús in Argentina, Krasnodar in Russia and Orlando City in the United States, before returning to the club of his loves in 2024. Since his return he won the 2024 Intermediate Tournament, the 2025 Uruguayan Super Cup and the 2025 Uruguayan Championship.
