Mario Pineida: Barcelona SC & Ecuador Mourn Loss

Family, friends and former teammates gathered in one of the wake rooms at the La Aurora Peace Park to say goodbye to Mario Alberto Pineida, a Barcelona SC player who was murdered on the afternoon of Wednesday, December 17.

Around 4:20 p.m. this Thursday, the coffin entered, guarded by the workers at the facility, amid the tears of some of those present.

Once located at the front of the room, a painting of him was placed next to Mario, which contained several images of the athlete wearing the Barcelona SC shirt, and also the two titles he won in 2016 and 2020 with the club.

Several soccer players who shared a team with Pineida attended the funeral. Among them were Luis Fernando León, with whom he met in Barcelona in 2021, and Fernando Chiqui Guerrero, with whom he shared a dressing room in Independiente del Valle.

In addition to the players, the coach and assistant coach of the yellow team, Ismael and Juan Rescalvo, respectively, also attended the funeral of the person they directed. The Spanish twins arrived in the middle of the year to take over the club after the departure of Segundo Alejandro Castillo and his work group.

The Barcelona SC players arrived after 5:00 p.m. to Mario Pineida’s wake.

The first yellow squad showed up around 5:30 p.m. to honor the memory of their teammate; Minutes before, coach Rescalvo and his assistant had left. (D)
