Defender returns earlier than expected
Latvian hockey national team defenseman Kristiāns Rubīns has expressed his determination to return to the ice sooner than initially predicted after sustaining a hand injury. Although initial estimates indicated that he could appear on the field only at the beginning of February, Rubin hopes to be ready to play already in the middle of January, more precisely – around January 15.

Kristiāns Rubīns is one of the leading defenders of the Latvian national team, who has represented the national team in five World Championships and two qualifying tournaments for the Olympic Games. His earlier return to action could also be significant ahead of the upcoming Milan Olympics. The head coach of the Latvian hockey team, Harijs Vītoliņš, plans to name the Olympic team on January 2, but changes can still be made in the application if necessary due to health problems. Thus, Rubin’s full readiness to play before the start of the Olympic tournament could secure him a place in the lineup.

The 27-year-old defenseman has represented various clubs in Sweden and North America during his career, including the ECHL’s Newfoundland Growlers, with whom he won the Kelly Cup. He has also played three games with the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs. Rubīns was also an important player in the historic success of the Latvian national team in 2023 at the World Championship, where the bronze medal was won.
