VEGHEL | At OBS Kompas, exercise is all about fun and exercising together. Thanks to the subsidy School and Environment Sports coaches Mats and Kim are active on the playground and in the groups this school year. They provide extra exercise moments, in line with the 2+1+2 concept of the municipality of Meierijstad: 2 hours of gym, 1 extra exercise hour and 2 hours of after-school activities per week.

Mats sees the effect every day. “The best thing is that children get to know new sports. Not just football, but also badminton, hockey or volleyball. Sometimes they even continue with it outside of school,” he says. His approach? Forms of play that are above all fun. Mats continues: “If one child participates enthusiastically, the rest will follow automatically.”

Kim also enjoys the enthusiasm. “Sometimes children ask what we are going to do before the break. That is contagious.” She sees that more and more students are participating, even groups that were previously less active. “For example, girls from the upper grades. At first they kept chatting, now there are ten of them throwing a ball at a time. That’s great to see,” says Kim.
The variety is great: from handball and hockey to relays, sack races and even baseball with real gloves. “Children discover sports that they are not yet familiar with,” Kim explains.

One thing counts for Mats and Kim: fun. “If almost the entire square participates, you know it works,” says Kim. Mats nods: “Exercise is for everyone. And if children leave smiling, our day is a success,” he adds finally.
