We will have to do without him for a while during the winter, but José De Cauwer will again be present as co-commentator next cycling season. And whether this satisfies cycling fans! This was clear to the readers of WielerNieuws.

De Cauwer is not thinking about quitting yet

A while ago, De Cauwer received a striking question during the live show of De Laatste Etapp in the Netherlands. An enthusiast casually asked him to continue as a commentator for another twenty years. De Cauwer had to carefully puncture that bubble, although at the same time he had something hopeful in his pocket.

“I’d love to,” he said. “My father got 103 and I am now at 76. But… that will be difficult. Still, I want to continue until I am eighty.” This means that De Cauwer would certainly like to add another four years.

With which he already exceeds his own ambitions. Because De Cauwer’s pension was already discussed last year. He then said the following: “I don’t know exactly how long I will continue, we will evaluate it regularly. But we are going to phase out anyway: my story as a commentator will end in two to three years,” he said at the time.

The crowd cheers

The logical poll question in our previous article was: Do you want De Cauwer to continue as a co-commentator for a long time? The outcome left little to the imagination. The responses were massive and remarkably unanimous.

De Cauwer clearly remains very popular with cycling fans. Of the approximately 2,200 votes, no less than 83 percent indicated that they would like to hear him as a commentator for years to come. Now it remains to be seen whether he will want to follow that enthusiasm himself.
