JAKARTA — The Indonesian men’s doubles badminton team rose to the occasion and won the gold medal at the 2025 East Asian Games by beating Malaysia 3-0 in the final on Wednesday (December 10, 2025).
In the clashes, Alwi Farhan contributed the first point for Indonesia. The 2023 world junior champion simply won the match in two straight games against Leong Jun Hao which ended with a score of 21-12 and 21-19.
The win further strengthened Alwi’s win-loss record against Leong which stands at 2-0. A previous victory he was able to achieve in the first round of the 2025 Korea Open event last September.
“It is the fruit of my hard work, of my coach, my psychologist and my two parents who accompany me every day. I hope my victory can inspire the victories of other friends,” Alwi said after the fight.
Alwi was previously unable to score points when Indonesia defeated Singapore in the semi-final. She went down against 2021 world titlist Loh Kean Yew and was forced to concede her opponent’s lead in three games.
Sabar Karyaman Gutama/Mohammad Reza Pahlevi Isfahani who then went down the ladder of victory in the two direct matches 21-12 and 21-12 against the pair who currently occupy the second place in the world, Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik.
The gold medal for the Indonesian men’s badminton team was determined by Mohammad Zaki Ubaidillah who won the third game. The 2025 Asian junior champion stopped Justin Hoh in two direct games 21-12 and 21-14.
This result allowed Indonesia to automatically hold the gold medal of the Eastern Oceania Games. In the first edition in Cambodia in 2023, Malaysia also fell victim to Indonesia in the final match of the men’s badminton pair.
Men’s doubles badminton was the fourth gold contributor for Indonesia at the Thailand 2025 SEA Games. The previous three gold contributors were achieved by the sports of taekwondo, canoeing and petanque.
The Indonesian women’s pair’s badminton team also actually reached the final of this edition. However, they had to settle for the silver medal as they were defeated 1-3 by hosts Thailand.
