Hamburg Towers vs. Thessaloniki: Last-Second Loss

Hamburg & Schleswig-HolsteinTowers lose at the last second to Thessaloniki

After their first victory in the BBL, Hamburg’s basketball players now want to finally triumph in the Eurocup. But in a dramatic game it’s not enough again.

Hamburg (dpa/lno) – The Veolia Towers Hamburg have to continue to wait for their first win of the season in the Eurocup. After ten defeats, head coach Benka Barloschky’s team also lost to Aris Thessaloniki Betsson 89:92 (39:47) in front of 2,651 spectators in the Inselpark Arena and is still at the bottom of the A group with no points.

Increased security measures were in place for the game due to the large number of visiting fans expected. There were no notable incidents, but the game had to be interrupted after less than five seconds. With the throw-off, not only did the stands with the Greek supporters drown in a shower of confetti, but several of the colorful pieces of paper also landed on the field.

Missed extra time at the last second

However, the Towers initially appeared unimpressed by the spectacle. In the second ten minutes, however, the Hanseatic team’s scoring rate decreased significantly, which is why the guests temporarily gained a lead of ten points.

The Hanseatic people were not defeated. Rather, Ross Williams turned things around again 90 seconds before the end of the third quarter with a throw from distance to make it 64:63.

At the last second, Ross Williams missed the possible equalizer with a three-pointer and thus extra time, so that in the end the Greeks celebrated together with their fans.
