Star basketball player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander won the North Star, a title awarded to the best Canadian athlete of the year.
The Thunder point guard earned NBA MVP honors last year before leading them to the championship. He was also named the NBA playoff MVP.
The 27-year-old, who hails from Hamilton, has picked up where he left off last season and is averaging 32.8 points per game for the Thunder, who began the 2025-26 season with a 23-1 record.
Gilgeous-Alexander also won this award in 2023.
Swimmer Summer McIntosh, who won the award in 2024, curler Rachel Homan, rugby star Sophie de Goede and hammer throw specialist Camryn Rogers were the other finalists for this individual honor in 2025. This award is awarded annually by the daily Toronto Star and is voted on by a committee made up of sports journalists and editors from across Canada.
