The Gambardella Cup match between FC Mougins and SC Bastia was stopped on Sunday. The cause was mortar fire on three players from the Corsican club, who were hospitalized.
The match in the first federal round of the Gambardella Cup between FC Mougins and SC Bastia did not come to an end on Sunday. Shortly after the hour mark, when the locals had just equalized, the match was interrupted due to mortar fire coming from outside the Valmasque stadium. Three players from the Corsican club were affected, including the goalkeeper, and were subsequently hospitalized.
The two clubs remain “at the disposal of the competent authorities”
In two press releases, the two clubs reacted: “Following the end of the Gambardella Cup match between FC Mougins and SC Bastia, due to violence in the stands leading to the injury of three young SC Bastia players, Sporting condemns in the strongest terms these unacceptable acts, which have no place in football, and even more so in a competition dedicated to youth and training. The club provides all its support to injured players, evacuated by the local firefighters and currently under observation. SC Bastia salutes the behavior of the leaders of FC Mougins in these difficult circumstances and remains at the disposal of the competent authorities, to which it will transmit all the necessary elements, while fully trusting the authorities to shed light on the facts and take the necessary decisions.
For its part, FC Mougins indicated that it “deeply regretted the situation”, then continued: “The club firmly condemns any behavior that is dangerous, irresponsible or contrary to the values of sport, and does not under any circumstances condone the use of smoke bombs or any other act which could endanger the players, the public, the officials and all those present”. The two clubs specify that they “keep themselves available to the competent authorities”.
The city of Mougins also published a press release: “The City obviously gives its full support to FC Mougins, this Sunday at the Valmasque stadium, a dangerous expression of debility which has nothing to do with sport, nor the values that we transmit to Mougins. We also send our thoughts to SC Bastia, the injured players and their loved ones. We wish them a speedy recovery.”
