Determined by a mix of votes from fans, media representatives, national team captains and coaches, the award is given to the player receiving the most votes, with each of the four voting bodies counting 25%. These all designate a top 3, with first place worth 5 points, second 3 points and third 1 point.
Available on the Fifa website, the details of the votes of the different players and coaches offer several juicy details. Starting with the absence of Kylian Mbappé, the captain of the France team, who perhaps did not want to decide between his two great friends Ousmane Dembélé and Achraf Hakimi.
The Moroccan full-back did not hesitate to place Mbappé in first position, just ahead of his PSG partner and Barcelona winger Raphinha. On the other hand, “Dembouz” was acclaimed by Lionel Messi, Harry Kane, Riyad Mahrez and Marquinhos in particular.
Deschamps chose Dembélé over Mbappé
Regarding the vote of the selectors, Didier Deschamps decided to put Dembélé in first place, relegating his captain to the Blues in second position. Carlo Ancelotti also voted for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, placing Raphinha second, just ahead of Mbappé.
On the other hand, the Real Madrid striker is at the top of the ranking of Lionel Scaloni, the Argentina coach, which does not include Dembélé but Pedri and Lamine Yamal.
